Geographical Indication (GI) is a trade-related intellectual property right under the WTO TRIPS Agreement. Due to its link between the territory and the uniqueness of the product it has a distinctive developmental nature compared to other forms of TRIPS. In collaboration with the European University Institute, WIPO and FAO, an executive workshop on GIs is held for LDC delegates at the European University Institute. Building on UNCTAD’s technical expertise as well as inputs from external experts and LDC experiences, the workshop emphasizes the potential of GI as a development tool for traditional products and territories in LDCs. The delegates are trained on the legal concept and protection of GIs, including the identification of potential products and implementing procedures. The seminar also provides the opportunity to discuss lessons learned from LDCs GI implementation.

By invitation only.
