Add to Calendar 2018-10-29 15:00 2018-10-29 17:00 Europe/Paris Roundtable: Raynal’s Histoire des deux Indes and European expansion

Guillaume-Thomas Raynal (1713-1796) was an Enlightenment writer whose Histoire des deux Indes, describing European colonial expansion in the East and the West, was a best-seller from its first edition in 1770 until the early nineteenth century. The work, to which several leading thinkers contributed, includes a condemnation of the slave trade and has been labelled “anticolonial” as well as simply “global”. The purpose of this meeting of the intellectual history working group is to discuss Raynal, his famous book and global history in the form of a roundtable with professors J.B. Shank, Junia Ferreira Furtado (both Fernard Braudel Fellows) and Ann Thomson (EUI). Further input will come from colleagues working on the Histoire des deux Indes at the University of Minnesota, who will join the roundtable through Skype. All are welcome to attend, either to participate or to listen.
