The School of Transnational Governance welcomes Giovanni Boccardi to an interview on how UNESCO manages heritage at risk.
As Chief of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit in UNESCO’s Culture Unit, Giovanni Boccardi is ideally placed to detail on how to work with and safeguard heritage endangered by conflict. As a practitioner with many years of experience working for UNESCO, Boccardi will highlight the relevance of culture to peace building and recovery from conflict.

The interview will cover various aspects of UNESCO’s historic and current strategies for working with endangered heritage, as well as recent areas of their work including Mosul, Timbuktu, and Syria. It will also explore the recent cooperation project “Protecting Cultural Heritage and Diversity in Complex Emergencies for Stability and Peace” between UNESCO and the European External Action Service (EEAS) on safeguarding the cultural heritage in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen.
