Russian political subversion – ‘active measures’ in KGB parlance – is very much in the news, but also has a deep historical pedigree. This conference brings together scholars, studying the history, historiography, objectives, and strategies of Russian covert subversion in Europe, the United States, and Canada. More specifically, participants will discuss the extent of Russian meddling in politics, media, academia, and the affairs of ethnic communities abroad, and explore the role of various national and transnational institutions in Russian active measures implemented across space and time. Importantly, the conference will provide insight into Russia’s so-called ‘hybrid war,’ political war, and cyber warfare, and their impact on regional and global security, and discuss the Russian government’s national security strategy from an historical and international relations perspectives. Participants will also illuminate the dynamics and changes in tactics and strategies of Russian active measures after 1991 and the West’s reactions to Russia’s activities, both globally and in its own territories.
