High Level Policy Dialogue - The Rule of Law and Sports

Dates:
  • Mon 18 Mar 2019 09.00 - 19.00
  Add to Calendar 2019-03-18 9:00 2019-03-18 19:00 Europe/Paris High Level Policy Dialogue - The Rule of Law and Sports

This High Level Policy Dialogue will focus on different dimensions of the relationship between the rule of law and sports. The autonomy of sports is well known and it has led to the development of its own system of rules and enforcement mechanisms. This autonomy has been increasingly challenged in light of perceived failures within those systems of rules and enforcement, including in their compatibility with fundamental principles of the rule of law. This has now included challenges before the European Court of Human Rights and National Constitutional Courts.

In this respect, the policy dialogue will bring together academics, policy makers and private actors in this area to discuss and elaborate on the crucial aspects and trends regarding the relationship between the rule of law and sports. Among the issues to be covered will be:

- The nature and powers of “judicial” and “independent” bodies of sports associations;
- The international sports arbitration system and its compatibility with general principles of law and right of access to justice;
- The protection and enforcement of human rights in the context of sports;
- Gender discrimination and sports.

Attendance at the event is by invitation only and takes place under Chatham House rules.
