Those who fall through the cracks: transnational (non-)governance of environmental displacement

Dates:
  • Tue 19 Mar 2019 14.30 - 16.30

Environmental displacement and climate-induced migration pose a number of
conceptual challenges, let alone political ones. Indeed, is there anything in
common between a retired Canadian deciding to go and live in Florida to avoid
Canadian winters, a desperate fisher family leaving a sinking Pacific island, a
Nigerian farmer migrating to town to earn some revenue during a dry spell,
and a Bangladeshi family taking refuge in a shelter during a cyclone?

Due to the increasing pace of climate change and environmental degradation,
the numbers of forcibly displaced people are likely to surge in the future. What
guidance do international mechanisms give us when considering protection of and
assistance to those most vulnerable? And may the recently adopted Global Compact
for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration show a way forward?
