It is estimated that 289,000 maternal deaths and 2.5 million newborn deaths occur every year, all around the world. This has been at the heart of global, collaborative, human development initiatives, since the turn of the present century. The new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have called for renewed commitment and emphasis on the accelerated reduction of maternal and newborn deaths. Currently, sub-Saharan Africa accounts for about half of all of the world’s maternal deaths, and the region accounts for 41% of all newborn deaths. Further, because it is estimated that every US$ 1 spent globally on actions aimed at improving maternal, newborn and child health could reap US$ 120 in benefits, the speaker will aim to share his work towards building a policy advocacy group for the improvement of maternal and newborn health in sub-Saharan Africa. The speaker is a Policy Leader fellow at the School of Transnational Governance, EUI and will present his work in progress to be followed by discussion with the audience.
