PhD School in research methodologies in human rights law
This PhD School will include lectures on various methodological issues in legal human rights research, and participant presentations related to methodological questions in their respective PhD thesis projects. It will bring together EUI PhD researchers and professors and PhD candidates from other universities, based on a networking approach and allowing for expert and peer commentary on the projects by EUI researchers. The number of hours will be at least 20 but may be significantly higher if the maximum number of 30 PhD researcher participants is reached. There will be 12 hours of lectures by Prof. Scheinin and visiting professors. Each PhD researcher presentation will be allocated a time slot of 45 minutes (including discussion). If their number exceeds 15, some of the sessions may be organised in two parallel groups with peer and professor commentators. The aim of the PhD School is to cover a wide range of methodological issues encountered in legal human rights research, including in relation to issues concerning sources, interpretation, permissible limitations, use of quantitative and qualitative empirical data, fragmentation, and comparative approaches. The participating PhD researchers will be requested to explicate their own methodological approaches or problems in order to receive comments from peers and professors.
