Add to Calendar 2019-05-29 14:30 2019-05-29 16:00 Europe/Paris Rumour and Manliness between Mughal India and Habsburg Iberia

In the framework of the HEC colloquia This lecture seeks to present my most recent book, Unwanted Neighbours: The Mughals, the Portuguese, and their Frontier Zones (OUP, 2018). The work delves into the ways in which the Estado da Índia understood and dealt with its frontier zones with Timurid India between c. 1570 and c. 1640, from Sind and Gujarat to the Deccan and Bengal. Unwanted Neighbours addresses the long, complex, and unequal relationship between a continental Muslim empire that was expanding into South India while often looking back to Central Asia, and a European Christian empire whose rulers considered themselves to be kings of the sea . Particular aspects of this relationship, such as the significance of cross-cultural rumours and the importance of gendered politics, will be explored.
