The European University Institute welcomes Maeza Ashenafi, recently appointed as the first woman Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia, for the next installment of the "Leaders Beyond the State" series. Maeza Ashenafi is an Ethiopian lawyer and a prominent women's rights activist, founder and executive director of the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association. In November 2018, she was appointed Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia. She was a high court judge between 1989 and 1992. In 1993 she served as a legal advisor in the Ethiopian Constitutional Drafting Commission. Meaza Ashenafi is well known for her contributions in the field of law, especially regarding legal protection of women; promotion of human rights; advocacy on violence against women; institution and partnership building; financial mediation in favour of women and resource mobilisation for various aspects of development.
