In the framework of the HEC Department Colloquium Eric Hobsbawm (1917-2012) was probably the best-known historian in the world at the time of his death. His books sold in their millions and were translated into over fifty languages. He was also a lifelong communist and a prominent public intellectual, not only in Britain but in many other countries as well, from Brazil to Italy. In this talk, Richard J Evans, author of the first full biography of Hobsbawm to be published, talks about Hobsbawm's life, and the connections between his personal background and development, his political commitment, and his achievements as an historian. Bio: Richard J Evans is Provost of Gresham College, London, and Regius Professor Emeritus of History at Cambridge. He is the author of many books, including In Defence of History, (Granta Books, London, September 1997); Lying about Hitler. History, Holocaust, and the David Irving Trial (Basic Books, New York, February 2001); The Coming of the Third Reich, (Allen Lane/Penguin Books, London, October 2003) and, more recently, The Pursuit of Power: Europe 1815-1914 (Penguin, 2016).
