Add to Calendar 2019-07-08 18:30 2019-07-08 20:00 Europe/Paris Book Presentation: Renovating Democracy: Governing in the Age of Globalization and Digital Capitalism

Democratic systems are in a continuous process of changing worldwide. The impact of globalism and digital capitalism have increased the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’; whereas the rise of populism in the West and the dominance of China in the East have accelerated those processes of democratic changes and increasing inequality. In Renovating Democracy, Nicolas Berggruen and Nathan Gardels conceive an alternative framework of governance through enhanced participation without populism and direct democracy via new mediating institutions that could complement representative government. In addition, the authors argue that globalization waves can be harnessed through ‘positive nationalism’ at home and global cooperation is feasible with a viable rules-based world order. Introductory remarks: Debora Spini | NYU Florence Presenters: Nicolas Berggruen and Nathan Gardels | Berggruen Institute Discussant: Luca Belgiorno-Nettis | The newDemocracy Foundation Moderator: Fabrizio Tassinari | School of Transnational Governance, EUI Nicolas Berggruen is the Chairman of the Berggruen Institute, which addresses fundamental political and cultural questions in our rapidly changing world. He is also co-author with Nathan Gardels of Renovating Democracy: Governing in the Age of Globalization and Digital Capitalism (University of California Press) and Intelligent Governance for the 21st Century, a Financial Times Book of the Year, and co-publisher of The WorldPost. Nathan Gardels is the editor-in-chief of The WorldPost and a senior adviser to the Berggruen Institute. He has written widely for The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harper’s Magazine, U.S. News & World Report and The New York Review of Books.
