Simulation and resampling method for inference and hypothesis testing (IWG Workshop)

Dates:
  • Fri 13 Dec 2019 10.00 - 16.00
Add to Calendar 2019-12-13 10:00 2019-12-13 16:00 Europe/Paris Simulation and resampling method for inference and hypothesis testing (IWG Workshop)

Applied researchers commonly rely on theoretical properties of well-known well-behaved statistical distributions to perform inference and hypothesis testing. In many situations, however, it is not reasonable to assume that the data comes from a known distribution. Even more, the theoretical properties of the statistic of interest might not be known or not exist at all. Such situations are rather common.

Computationally intensive methods provide an alternative approach to inference and hypothesis testing. In this workshop we will cover three widely used statistical tools that serve these purposes.

-  Resampling methods: parametric and non-paramedic bootstrap

-  Monte Carlo simulation

-  Randomization (permutation) tests

Participants will be introduced to the theoretical ideas behind these techniques. In tandem, the workshop will demonstrate how to implement these methods from scratch in the statistical package R, preparing participants to use them in their own research.
