Particularly, classical liberalism is associated with a laissez-faire approach to economic regulation and a accordingly "slim" government apparatus. Only in his fifth and last book of the Wealth of Nations Smith proceeds to expound which functions of government are necessary for the economic system he envisions and which are excessive.
