International Institutions and Global Governance
This seminar surveys the literature on international institutions, international order, and global governance, considering both classic and contemporary work. Social theoretically, we range broadly, examining scholarship grounded in rationalism as well as social constructivism. Topics to be addressed include theorizing international institutions, organizations and governance; international institutions and human rights; international/regional organizations; identity and international institutions; peacekeeping and international institutions; legitimacy beyond the nation state; and the rising power push back / populist backlash against the institutions of the liberal order. The seminar does not assume that institutions are always a force for good in global politics, or that they always matter; they often do not. Rather, our goal – by engaging a selection of cutting edge theories and arguments – is to understand better when, how, and through what processes and mechanisms they make a difference.
