Instruments for Better Coherence of EU Trade Policy and NTPOs
Every year, the European University Institute and the World Trade Institute come together to organise the World Trade Forum, with focus on a specific topic, the outcome of which is an edited collection with contributions from economists, political scientists and lawyers. This year’s edited collection will gather research outputs on the topics covered by the H2020 RESPECT project, analysing EU trade policy coherence with non-trade policy objectives (NTPOs). Three webinars will explore the research questions and preliminary findings, which will be further analysed in this year’s World Trade Forum book.
This third webinar will focus on the analysis of the instruments that the EU has developed or could use to achieve greater coherence between trade and non-trade objectives. Bernard Hoekman will begin the webinar, presenting his joint paper with Rorden Wilkinson on the use of soft power to achieve more coherence in global trade governance. Wolfgang Weiß will then look more deeply at the issue of enforcement and monitoring of NTPOs commitments in trade agreements and the need for a stronger involvement of the European Parliament. Finally, Hugo Rojas-Romagosa will look at the effects of NTPOs embedded in PTAs on bilateral FDI between the signing parties. The webinar will conclude with a collective discussion following the presentations.
Deadline for Applications: 16 October @ 9am
Applicants will be notified by noon on 16 October whether their application to participate was successful.
