This workshop is part of the ReligioWest research program. It explores the topic of religious pluralism in state institutions (prisons and the military) with a particular focus on Islam as a “newcomer religion” to the state-religious relations in Western Europe. The countries we focus on in this workshop are Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and United Kingdom. The originality of this workshop lies in the fact that, besides established researchers, we have invited active Muslim prison and military chaplains for a “working session” and a number of emerging young Muslim scholars who have done research on this topic.
