Aviation has long intersected with global trends in the consumer and tourism booms, acting as an agent of modernization and socioeconomic transformation. So far, most historical scholarship has been skewed in favour of America and Western Europe. Yet, Olympic Airways (OA), Greece’s now bankrupt air carrier but once a five-continent airline with a global marketing campaign, provides a fascinating story of the dynamic nature of modernization and national identity. Offering a new socio-cultural history of post-war Greece and Southern Europe, the project on OA challenges temporal, conceptual and geographical assumptions of modernity in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Please register in order to get a seat or the ZOOM link.
