This keynote lecture in the context of the inaugural workshop of the Department of History features a presentation by Tamar Herzog (Harvard University).
This lecture will interrogate the uses of "old" and "new" in Europe’s late medieval and early modern period. It will demonstrate that these categories were applied to individuals and groups in both the religious and the civic sphere, in both Europe and its colonial domains. Initially linked to debates inside the church, they permeated the civic sphere, where they also produced important results that expressed both belief in the ability of people to change and a constant mistrust that they had. "old" and "new", Herzog shows, were technologies meant to enable integration as well as justify exclusion and their employment depended on both memory and oblivion.
