The EUI's Max Weber Programme welcomes Juho Härkönen as the next Director of the Programme and Dean of Postdoctoral Studies. Professor Juho Härkönen succeeds Dorothee Bohle, who served two years of directorship.

Juho Härkönen is currently Professor of Sociology at the EUI's SPS Department and Co-Director of the Comparative Life Course and Inequality Research Centre, and of Florence Population Studies. He is a member of the EC advisory group on democracy and demography, which meets regularly with the Vice President of the European Commission for Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Šuica.

At the EUI, Professor Härkönen coordinates the Inequality Working Group, and is involved in the CRITEVENTS and Technequality research projects. His research interests cover life course research, the causes and consequences of family dynamics and structure, social stratification, and comparative research, with recent publications covering stratification in prenatal smoking, antecedents and outcomes of divorce, and occupational careers. He co-edits, with Professor Laura Bernardi (Lausanne University), the multidisciplinary journal Advances in Life Course Research.

In reacting to his new appointment, Professor Härkönen said ”I am very honoured and thrilled to start as the new Director of the Max Weber Programme, a real treasure of the EUI. During the years, the MWP has become well established and well-run and it is very easy to step into the new role. During my Directorship, I want to contribute to the continuing success of the Programme and make sure that it serves the intellectual curiousity and academic careers of the fellows as well as the academic life of the EUI as a whole."
