Dr. Aqilah Sandhu is a researcher and lecturer in law based in Augsburg, Germany at the Chair of Prof. Dr. Matthias Rossi. Her research focusses on European Law, Fundamental Rights and Data Protection Law in the multi-level system of the European constitutional area.Having studied Law at the University of Augsburg, she passed the first state examination in 2014 and the second state examination in 2016, after having conducted her legal clerkship at the district of the Higher Regional Court of Munich. During her legal traineeship, she also worked at the German Foreign Ministry (Berlin) in the department tasked with EU affairs.In 2020 she earned her doctorate with a thesis on "The Unitarization of Fundamental Rights by means of Secondary Law" (in German: "Grundrechtsunitarisierung durch Sekundärrecht"). The thesis analyses the applicability of the German Fundamental Rights within the scope of opening clauses in European Data Protection Law under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In 2021, the book was published in the series "Verfassungsentwicklung in Europa" ("Constitutional development in Europe") by the Mohr Siebeck Verlag and was awarded the Dissertation Prize of the Alumni Association of the Law Faculty at the University of Augsburg.In the fall/winter term 2021/2022 she held an Interim Junior Professorship for Public Law at the Justus-Liebig-University of Gießen, teaching Constitutional Law and Fundamental Rights.
