Arnout Van De Rijt

Biography

Arnout van de Rijt joined the Department of Political and Social Sciences in September 2019. Van de Rijt received his PhD in Sociology from Cornell University in 2007 and worked until 2016 as Assistant and Associate Professor of Sociology at Stony Brook University, where he co-founded and -led the Center for Computational Social Science. Since 2016 he has been Professor of Sociology at Utrecht University. He is president of the International Network of Analytical Sociology and elected member of the European Academy of Sociology. Van de Rijt received the Lynton Freeman (2010) and Raymond Boudon (2017) early career awards. Van de Rijt is Editor-in-Chief of Sociological Science (impact factor 6.2).

Additional information

I welcome PhD proposals that use quantitative methods to study questions in the broad research areas of cooperation and social inequality. I will particularly be able to add value to research that either involves computational social science -- internet experiments, social network analysis, large-scale text analysis, agent-based models -- or one way or another is concerned with endogenous forms of inequality formation, e.g. Matthew effects, cumulative advantage, rich-get-richer processes.
