Biography

Teija Tiilikainen joined the School of Transnational Governance as Part-Time Professor in 2018. She is the Director of the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats.

Previously, she was the Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (2010-2019). Before her nomination to this position in 2010, Professor Tiilikainen was the Director of the Network of European Studies at the University of Helsinki (2003-2009). She has also served as Secretary of State at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland from 2007 to 2008.

She was a member of the European Convention in 2002-03 and a member of the Panel of Eminent Persons on European Security as a Common Project led by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger in 2015-16. She is currently the vice-chairperson of the executive board of the University of Helsinki.

In her research, Professor Tiilikainen has focused on issues related to European integration and on European security policy. She has published widely on these topics; her most recent book is an edited volume (together with Dan Hamilton) “Domestic determinants of Foreign Policy in the European Union and United States” (Johns Hopkins University and FIIA, 2018). She has published around 100 articles and book chapters in academic publications and publications directed at a wider audience.
