Cross-Cutting Cleavages, Within-Group Heterogeneity, and Ethnoracial Boundaries in the United States

Immigration has increased overall diversity in the United States while also making racialcategories more internally heterogenous. This project examines how such heterogeneityreshapes racial boundaries in America. Focusing on the intersection of race andsocioeconomic attainment, it tests whether greater income overlap between racialcategories, and greater diversity within them, affects how Americans classify others, perceive racial divisions, and allocate resources. The study uses an online vignetteexperiment divided into three parts, each exploring a different aspect of racialboundaries. Requested funds will cover data collection, including participantcompensation and survey platform fees.
