Research project Driving sustainable climate transition of video-on-demand platforms at a time of transformation [StreamSCAPES] The goal of StreamSCAPES is to initiate a new era of forward-thinking and action in the ways production, consumption, and decision-making systems in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) lead the sustainable climate transition (SCT). The project places a particular emphasis on Video-On-Demand (VOD) platforms as central nodes within audiovisual and cultural ecosystems. Specifically, StreamSCAPES will: Provide an interdisciplinary mapping and assessment of how VOD platforms can significantly reduce their environmental impact within the CCIs. Pilot the transformative impact of VOD platforms in fostering innovative ideas to engage the ‘Blue Skies’ generation through a hub-based future studies approach, with a special focus on engaging children and youth. Co-test the potential of VOD platforms to contribute to the SCT, aligning with the European Industrial Strategy and the European Green Deal. To achieve this, a multi-stakeholder team of four core academics and eight key stakeholders, including several European VOD platforms, will combine original data, research, and best practices. StreamSCAPES’s team will: Develop robust methods to measure the carbon footprint of VOD platforms and pilot an SCT VOD certification. Design and launch business clinics offering guidance on how VOD platforms can integrate sustainable business models. Create the StreamSCAPES Dashboard, making public data (e.g., carbon footprints of VOD platforms) available to policymakers, professionals, and citizens. Identify underutilised strategies that VOD platforms can adopt to enhance sustainable climate transitions (SCT). Deliver a first-aid kit handbook to support VOD professionals, audiovisual and cultural workers, and citizens in advancing the SCT, with particular attention to youth engagement and fostering ‘Blue Skies’ imaginations for innovation.
