PowerMAX - Maximising grid integration and optimisation of long duration energy storage to synergise revenue streams

As power systems increasingly rely on renewable energy sources, long-duration energy storage (LDES) is expected to play a key role in providing flexibility, adequacy, and resilience. PowerMAX brings together 19 partners from 10 countries across Europe, North America, and South America to develop and validate tools, technologies, and business models that support the large-scale integration of LDES into renewable-based power systems.

The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme under grant agreement No. 101268626

PowerMAX brings together 19 partners from 10 countries across Europe, North America, and South America to advance the integration of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) into renewable-based power systems.

The project develops modelling tools that combine market simulation, grid expansion analysis, and techno-economic optimisation to evaluate the contribution of LDES to system flexibility, adequacy, and resilience across multiple market timeframes.

Three storage technologies, molten salt, hydrogen, and lithium-ion, are implemented in demonstration sites in Spain, Italy, and Canada, with operational data used to validate models and control strategies at TRL 7. PowerMAX also develops digital twins that represent both storage asset performance and interactions with electricity markets and grid constraints.

Open-source software and harmonised data structures support replicability and wider uptake. Replication studies in Norway and Bolivia test the methods under different grid and market conditions, while business models, market design recommendations, and stakeholder engagement activities support the large-scale deployment of LDES in increasingly renewable power systems.
