Paving the way for the rise of outsiders: Candidate and voter behavior in an era of political disillusionment

The rise of anti-establishment sentiment among citizens is a feature of our times (e.g., Haerpfer etal. 2020; Guiso et al. 2019), often boosting the breakthrough of outsider candidates around the globe. Recent trends in the electoral campaigns of many Latin American and European countries illustrate this phenomenon. Yet—despite widespread victories of politicians running as outsiders on the right, the left, and the center of policy spaces—the effectiveness of their appeals varies across informational and institutional environments.

The broader research project investigates the conditions that facilitate the entrance and the electoral success of political outsider candidates.
