This project has received funding via the EUI ESR call 2025, dedicated to Early Stage Researchers, with the contribution of the EUI Widening Europe Programme. The EUI Widening Europe Programme initiative, backed by contributions from the European Union and EUI Contracting States, is designed to strengthen internationalisation, competitiveness, and quality in research in Widening countries, and thus foster a more cohesive European Higher Education and Research area.
The project aims at examining the causal impact of the escalating mass tourism on quality of life for residents in Italian's primary tourism hubs. Focusing on “touristification” patterns also largely driven by peer-to-peer platforms, we employ municipality-level panel data to analyse tourism intensity against indicators of resident well-being, including rental prices, property values, income levels, neighbourhood amenities, and migration patterns.
By investigating these relationships, this research seeks to provide a rigorous assessment of tourism's influence on urban liveability, informing a sustainable framework for balancing tourism growth with resident welfare in Italy’s most affected cities.
