Posted on 26 September 2011

H.E. Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, President of PortugalOn 12 October, His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic Aníbal António Cavaco Silva visits the European University Institute.

In the framework of the newly established Debating Europe series, President Cavaco Silva gives a public lecture on "The European Union: lessons learned from the present crisis"?  at 17h30. The lecture is in Portuguese, with simultaneous translation in English and Italian, and takes place in the Theatre, Badia Fiesolana.

Before the lecture, President Cavaco Silva meets the EUI Portuguese community. A restricted dinner offered by the President of the EUI, Prof. Josep Borrell Fontelles,  follows.

President Aníbal António Cavaco Silva was elected as Portuguese President in January 2006 and was re-elected in January 2011 for a second five-year term. Previously he served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1985-1995 (achieving two absolute majorities in legislative elections) and was Minister of Finance as well as a regular Member of Parliament (1980-1983). During his political career, Cavaco Silva demonstrated a strong commitment to the European integration process.

President Cavaco Silva holds a degree in finance from the Lisbon Higher Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences (ISCEF) and a doctorate in economics from the University of York (UK). He lectured at the ISCEF and was Professor at the Faculty of Economics in Lisbon New University as well as at the Portuguese Catholic University. During his academic career he published widely on subjects of international finance and economic and monetary policies.

He has been awarded several renowned international prizes and honorary degrees from various universities.

Debating Europe is a new pillar of the EUI’s activities, focused on debating the process of European integration and the major issues confronting contemporary European society. In line with the Convention setting up the EUI, this programme will be a primary platform for the exchange and discussion of ideas and experiences. Debating Europe is conceptualised as a high-level initiative that reflects on – and impacts – the European policy debate, and that enables the EUI to contribute to this debate.

The visit of President Cavaco Silva is his second visit to the EUI, where he gave a “Jean Monnet Lecture” on the topic of European identity in 1989.
