Debating Europe

A New Discussion Series at the EUI

As a new pillar of its activities, the European University Institute (EUI) is developing a programme focused on debating the process of European integration and the major issues confronting contemporary European society. In line with the Convention setting up the EUI, this programme is a primary platform for the exchange and discussion of ideas and experiences. Debating Europe is conceptualised as a high-level initiative that reflects on – and impacts – the European policy debate, and that enables the EUI to contribute to this debate.

The programme is embedded in the Institute’s research topics and projects. Debating Europe consists above all of public events and exchange, which mainly involve external academics, decision-makers and journalists. In addition to these main speakers, junior and senior academics of the EUI research community actively contribute to the individual debates.

Offering a dynamic interface between the world of practitioners and academia, the debate series augments the EUI’s impact on the European policy debate.  The outcome of selected events is published in a special series of papers. In addition, all the debates are recorded and are accessible via the EUI’s video repository.

On 6 October 2011, the inaugural Debating Europe event features the Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and President of the European Parliament ret. Hans-Gert Pöttering, MEP.
