On 6 December, Aleksander Kwaśniewski visits the European University Institute. Mr. Kwasniewski is the current President of the European Council on Tolerance and Reconcialiation (ECTR) and is a former President of the Republic of Poland.

In the framework of the EUI’s Debating Europe series, the President gives a public lecture entitled “The Future of Europe and the EU Neighborhood”. The lecture takes place at 17.00 in the Teatro and Professor Marise Cremona will serve as discussant of the lecture and the following debate.

Aleksander Kwaśniewski served as President of the Republic of Poland from 1995 – 2005 and participated in the well-known “Round-Table” negotiations, which finally brought the peaceful transformation of Poland from communism to democracy. Furthermore, he was co-founding member and first chairman of the Social Democratic Party. During his Presidency he was a strong proponent of European integration, he campaigned for approval of the European Union accession treaty and was a leading figure in European Politics.

Kwaśniewski studied transport economics and foreign trade at the University of Gdańsk and was appointed Distinguished Scholar in the Practice of Global Leadership at Georgetown University in 2006.

Debating Europe is a new pillar of the EUI’s activities, focused on debating the process of European integration and the major issues confronting contemporary European society. In line with the Convention setting up the EUI, this programme will be a primary platform for the exchange and discussion of ideas and experiences. Debating Europe is conceptualised as a high-level initiative that reflects on – and impacts – the European policy debate, and that enables the EUI to contribute to this debate.
