The STG Policy Leader Fellows will examine states’ attitudes and challenges in implementing and upholding asylum policy.

From Poland and Belarus to the shores of Greece, to the United States’ continuation of the remain in Mexico policy - states’ attitudes towards and response to increasing numbers of asylum seekers is alarming. The number of asylum seekers worldwide is rising; doubling within a decade to 10.8 million. While international law protects individuals fleeing persecution and seeking safety, states continue to work to prevent asylum-seekers’ ability to cross borders, limit their rights and mobility, and due to strained capacity, may take years to adjudicate their claim.

This participatory session will facilitate discussion on the pressures facing asylum policy: Are any states doing it well? What does the rule of law dictate about states’ response to asylum? How does poor implementation and limited capacity impact its value? How will citizens’ perceptions of asylum policy affect states’ current and future commitment to upholding the rule of law?

Speakers:

  • Stephanie Acker, Policy Leader Fellow
  • Iftach Cohen, Policy Leader Fellow
