Historical Archives of the European Union

Celebrating 40 years in 2024

The HAEU preserves and makes accessible for research the archives deposited by EU institutions according to the thirty-year rule governing access to archival material. It also collects and preserves private papers of individuals, movements and international organisations involved in European integration. Finally, it facilitates research on the history of the European Union, promotes public interest in European integration and enhances transparency in the functioning of EU Institutions.

Users receive support to conduct their research at the Archives through a range of grant programmes and benefit from a large collection of research guides and specialised library resources.

The Alcide De Gasperi Research Centre on the History of European Integration supports young researchers, coordinates networks of historians, facilitates the use of primary sources and increases public interest in European integration history.

New European Investment Bank files available for online consultation

362 files transferred from the European Investment Bank to the Historical Archives of the European Union are now available for online consultation. The files include documents concerning the Bank’s governance, as well as contract files from over 100 projects financed by the Bank between 1971 and 1975.

Public access and right to information in widening countries focus of OPENARCH

Participants in the international research project ‘OPENARCH - Open archives for social science research in widening countries,’ funded by the EUI’s Widening Europe Programme, met in Maribor, Slovenia to discuss recent research on public access to archives across Central and Eastern Europe.

Commission reconfirms Historical Archives' role in anniversary declaration

To mark the fortieth anniversary of the Historical Archives, the European Commission and the EUI signed a joint declaration reconfirming the Archives’ mission to preserve and make accessible to the public the historical documents of the institutions, bodies, and agencies of the European Union.

EU own resources and EU financial power focus of ECA-funded project proposals

The selection committee of the European Court of Auditors Postgraduate Research Grant at the Historical Archives of the European Union has named two scholars to receive support for projects based on primary research at the Archives. The selection pertains to the ECA’s 2024 call for applications.

Europe and Europeans 1950>2020: 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration

2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, a short but powerful statement made by the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, on the 9th of May 1950. The declaration, drafted by Jean Monnet and pronounced by Schuman, initiated the process of European integration with its vision of a joint French and German coal and steel production.
