EUI Scholarships for Widening Countries (Master in Economic Research)

In the framework of its Widening Programme aimed at equalising research capacity across Europe, the EUI offers scholarships for early-stage researchers from the countries listed below:  

Funding Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet both of the following criteria (1 and 2):

  1. Hold the nationality of a country targeted by the Widening Europe Programme (as per the list below).
  2. Have completed a university degree programme in a country targeted by the Widening Europe Programme (as per the list below) within five years of the application deadline*, or be due to complete it by 31 August 2026. *This condition does not apply to Ukrainian nationals displaced after 24 February 2022.

Countries targeted by the Widening Europe Programme

  • Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
  • Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo(1), Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine.

    (1) This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244(1999) and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.

Candidates are requested to submit a copy of their ID/Passport as part of their EUI Online Application Form, so as to confirm their nationality(ies). The copy of the ID document(s) will be processed only by the EUI Administration and the relevant funding authority(ies), it will not be distributed to the EUI departmental selection committee.

General Degree Requirements

Candidates should normally have completed a Master's or equivalent degree in an academic discipline relevant to the Master in Economic Research programme. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree are considered on an individual basis. The degree must be awarded no later than 31 August.
