Externally Funded Scholarships

Candidates who do not qualify for an existing grant programme may be considered for admission only if they secure external sponsorship.

General Conditions

  • Departments may consider a limited number of applicants who can guarantee such funding.
  • All tuition fees and maintenance grants must be paid through a recognised national or private grant foundation. The funding must be secured by May, and the tuition fee (if applicable) must be paid by June at the very latest.
  • Self-financing candidates are not permitted.
  • Any external scholarship must comply fully with the EUI academic rules and regulations and policies.

Financial and Funding Requirements

The candidate’s external sponsor is expected to:

  • If the candidate does not hold the nationality of an EUI contracting state (*see list below) pay the EUI annual tuition fees for the entire duration of the programme (4 years). For the 2026-27 academic year, the fee is 15.600 EUR (subject to increase in subsequent academic years).
  • Guarantee sufficient funds (recommended minimum grant 1.650 EUR a month) to support the candidate in Florence during the 4-year programme (48 months). If a 4-year funding guarantee is not possible at the time of admission, a minimum of 3 years (36 months) can be applied.
  • Candidates admitted with external funding must be covered by a health insurance policy that is valid in Italy, for both emergency and general healthcare and for the whole duration of their stay at the Institute (** see further details at the bottom of this page).

The Principal is authorised to reduce or waive fees for candidates. The EUI is not in a position to give assistance in finding external financial support.

(*) EUI Contracting States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden.

Application Procedure

Candidates should select the 'External Funding' option in the Grant Authority section of the EUI online application form and indicate the potential sponsor's name in the justification field of the same form.

Additional details on the sponsorship can be indicated in the ‘Additional Notes’ field of the form.

Need for early decision on admission

Candidates who need to apply for a grant from a government authority or grant foundation with a deadline that does not fit within the EUI selection schedule may, in exceptional circumstances, request an earlier decision on admission. In no case can a decision be taken earlier than the EUI annual application deadline.

Candidates must contact applyres@eui.eu and be prepared to provide all details explaining why an early answer is necessary.

(**)Further details on health insurance coverage:

Please note that all EUI members must be covered by a health insurance policy that is valid in Italy, for both emergency and general healthcare and for the whole duration of their stay at the Institute.

Please note that the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) cannot be considered as sufficient health coverage for EUI members. Though EU citizens with EHIC can access emergency healthcare in Italy, the EHIC does not provide an integrated access to the Italian National Health System for general/daily healthcare.

Therefore, all new EUI members, regardless of having an EHIC, should subscribe to a private health insurance scheme, which is valid in Italy, for the whole duration of their EUI membership. Researchers may consider subscribing, as self-paying members, to the EUI collective health insurance CIGNA for the duration of their stay at the EUI. The request must be submitted within the first month of affiliation. Alternatively, researchers may subscribe to any other health insurance policy of their choice, provided that it is valid in Italy and that covers both emergency and general healthcare.

Upon arrival, they must register their health insurance information on My EUI portal via my.eui.eu. For further information, please contact the Health Insurance Team.
