To apply for these grants, candidates must select “Grants for Foreigners: ALB, BIH, CHN, EGY, ETH, MNE, NGA, MKD, XKX, RUS, SRB, TUN, TUR, UKR, USA” in the Funding Authority section of the EUI application form.
Candidates who do not select the correct funding authority cannot be considered for admission under this funding programme.
This funding programme is highly competitive, typically attracting around 100 applications per Department and over 200 in the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation - Directorate General for Growth and Export Promotion – Office VII Promotion of Italofonia - awards grants to doctoral candidates who are nationals of the following countries:
- Albania
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Egypt
- Ethiopia
- Montenegro
- Nigeria
- North Macedonia
- Kosovo
- People's Republic of China (PRC)
- Russian Federation
- Serbia
- Tunisia
- Turkey
- Ukraine
- United States of America (USA)
EU Candidates who are dual nationals (i.e. nationals of the above-mentioned countries, as well as nationals of an EU member state) are not eligible for these scholarships.
Grants and Allowances
Monthly Grant: 1,685 € as of 1 January 2027
Family allowance: No
Travel allowance: Yes (provided by the EUI)
Health insurance: Yes
The Grant Authority provides a monthly grant for the first three years of EUI Ph.D. Programme. The fourth year is covered by the EUI (the 2027 EUI 4th-year grant is 1.685 € per month, in addition to other allowances).
