Romania

No separate funding application is required.

The application for admission to the EUI doctoral programme is automatically an application for a national grant.

Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the general EUI terms and conditions of eligibility, the following conditions of the Ministry for Education and Research of Romania apply:

    • The applicant should be a Romanian citizen. A valid Romanian ID or passport showing their Romanian citizenship should be provided;
    • Dual citizenship applicants may apply, if one of their citizenships is Romanian. In this case, a valid Romanian ID or passport showing their Romanian citizenship should be provided;
    • The applicant should have a bachelor or a master degree diploma from an accredited Romanian university. A copy of their diploma issued by an accredited Romanian institution should be uploaded;
    • The applicant shall present a master degree and a bachelor degree, which together should have at least 300 ECTS. They should provide diplomas accompanied by diploma supplement.

Grants and Allowances

Monthly Grant: € 1,620

The Authority provides a monthly grant for the first three years of the EUI PhD Programme. The fourth year is covered by the EUI (2026 EUI monthly grant amount is 1,650 EUR per month, in addition to other allowances).

Please note that, under Romanian law, doctoral researchers holding a Romanian-funded grant are required to reimburse the total amount of grant payments received if they withdraw from the doctoral programme or fail to complete it. If admitted, you are strongly advised to read the scholarship contract carefully to ensure that you fully understand its legal terms and conditions.
