Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to

  • Explain your research clearly to a variety of audiences.
  • Introduce and interact with other academics.
  • Use diverse strategies to support your speaking including visuals and non-verbal communication.
  • Understand the influence of culture on exchanges and use tools for intercultural communication.
  • Offer and respond to opinions and give and receive feedback in various academic contexts.
  • Be more confident in speaking and participating in academic contexts.

Course contents

This course examines the speaking scenarios that occur in academic environments. We will explore a range of situations including informal academic encounters, seminars, conferences, panels, supervisory meetings, and team discussions. Through practical activities and analysis, you will learn how to communicate effectively in these settings and adapt your language and delivery to suit different audiences and purposes. The course provides tools to facilitate clear, confident and professional communication to enable you to contribute meaningfully to academic contexts.
