Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • have a clear understanding of relevant discipline-specific aspects of academic writing within their chosen field of study
  • gain awareness of any style issues in academic writing that are associated with their subject
  • enhance their knowledge of academic terminology and grammar for writing academic prose and feel able to apply this satisfactorily in their writing

Course contents

The aim of this course is to build on your existing experience and, with guidance and through practice and feedback, build your confidence in academic writing. The work you do during the course is prepared to support your departmental programme throughout the year. This course is on Monday mornings and runs from October to December.

Completion of this course will allow you access to and text revision and thesis correction services.

Learning Methods and Activities

The learning and teaching strategies used are:

  • teacher input on language for and functions of research writing
  • peer discussion of these technical and functional matters
  • small group work for in-class close-reading and short-writing activities
  • submission of drafts with teacher feedback
