Marek Cichocki discusses the future evolution of European identity

The sequence of grave crises in the last decade, now culminating in the disastrous pandemic, has challenged the evolution of the European identity. Has it also shifted the trajectory of that evolution? Recent phenomena such as mass politics, populism, and the polarisation of public opinion have changed these circumstances. Should we now add the new and growing civilisational competition in world politics as an important additional factor influencing these circumstances? Can the old concept of civilisation be helpful to better understand the evolution of the European identity in future?

Marek Cichocki is Robert Schuman fellow at the Schuman Centre and Chair in European Civilisation at the College of Europe, Natolin campus. He is a Polish philosopher, historian of political thought, journalist, conservative columnist and former advisor to Lech Kaczynski, the late president of Poland.
