This year's summer academy will take an in-depth look at inequality in Europe, offering a rich programme that includes the participation of SPS faculty members, Professors Klarita Gërxhani, Filip Kostelka, Ellen Immergut, Simon Hix, and Arnout van de Rijt. Professor Jeffrey Checkel will deliver the keynote lecture.

Since the financial crisis and the recent pandemic, rising levels of income and wealth inequality have received increasing popular attention. In public debates, growing inequalities within and between countries are considered as important driving forces behind the rise of populism all over Europe, Brexit, and the illiberal political turns in Hungary and Poland. All of this and the overall implications of the current war in Ukraine confront the European Union (EU) and democracy altogether with an existential crisis.

The Academy is a chance for participants to have a full-immersion experience in the academic and social life of the EUI. Participants will attend a mix of lectures and workshops, and have the opportunity to present their work and obtain feedback both from peers and faculty. A tour of the city and other social activities are also planned.

During the course, participants will examine questions such as the conceptualisation and measurement of inequality, comparative inequality, solidarity, policy solutions and the welfare state, social citizenship, and European integration.
