His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Senior Minister of Singapore, will engage in a conversation with students, fellows and researchers at the European University Institute about global governance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The EUI community is cordially invited to a conversation with His Excellency Tharman Shanmugaratnam at Palazzo Buontalenti, headquarters of the EUI School of Transnational Governance.

Shanmugaratnam is currently serving as the Senior Minster of Singapore, after serving as Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister for eight years. Tharman Shanmugaratnam is an insightful observer of globalisation and the evolution of our societies. He brings to the discussion a unique blend of Western education and Asian culture. He is one of the most respected global voices on interdependence, finance and international collective action.

Internationally, Tharman Shanmugaratnam co-chairs the G20 High Level Independent Panel on Global Financing for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, established in January 2021, together with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Lawrence Summers. He also chairs the Group of Thirty, a global council of economic and financial leaders from the public and private sectors and academia. He has led the G20 Eminent Persons Group on Global Financial Governance which in 2018 proposed reforms in development finance and the international monetary system to advance a new, cooperative international order. He earlier chaired the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), the IMF's key policy forum for four years. He was its first Asian chair.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam holds a bachelor's degree at the LSE, an MPhil in economics from the University of Cambridge, and a Master in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

This event is exclusive for the EUI community (EUI members may register here).
