What is the licensing framework of standard essential patents (SEPs) for connectivity standards such as 5G and Wi-Fi? How will the framework change with the Internet of Things (IoT)?The Florence School of Regulation – Communications & Media presents a book by EUI Research Fellow Igor Nikolic, Licensing Standard Essential Patents: FRAND and the Internet of Things (Hart Publishing 2021).The book analyses the evolution of the licensing framework for standard essential patents (SEPs) in over two decades of legal, economic and policy debates and licensing disputes. It also assesses the challenges posed by the use of 5G standard in many different industries and devices. 5G, as well as other cellular standards, will feature a prominent role in bringing connectivity to the Internet of Things (IoT).The book presentation will be followed by a roundtable dedicated to discussing the existing licensing framework for SEPs, the challenges posed by the use of SEPs by different industries and what needs to change to enable more predictable, transparent, and efficient SEP licensing in the IoT.
