The word "migration" has acquired a negative connotation as it conjures up images of refugees flocking to foreign borders, but a closer look shows that there are different categories of migrants and that this social stratification determines how they are welcomed. While those who are forced to leave their homes or have limited economic means are either stranded or shunned in their chosen destinations — whether through harsh treatment or hardline policies — those with greater economic and social capital have the privilege to choose which country they'd like to have citizenship or residence status in thanks to an industry composed of public and private actors that facilitate the process for them.In this talk, Yasasmin Kaviratne and Anna Patricia Valerio will juxtapose the vastly different treatments that these groups of people face and examine the broader implications of these policies and practices.
