The EUI Diplomatic/International History Working Group hosts an open debate with comments from Professor Mario Del Pero (Sciences Po Paris) and Professor at the EUI Department of History and Civilisation, Federico Romero.

As the first inter-European, full-scale armed conflict since World War II, the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian War has rekindled old fears and debates across Europe, if not worldwide.

Not alien to this phenomenon, historians are now called on to help elucidate some major questions: How far can we trace back the historical roots of this conflict? What role have NATO and the West played in Eastern Europe over the last 30 years? And from a historical perspective, what does European security mean in a globalised, nuclear, and multilateral era?

To reflect on these and other questions, the Diplomatic/International History Working Group hosts an open debate with comments from Professor Mario Del Pero (Sciences Po Paris) and Professor Federico Romero (EUI). Drawing on his expertise in Cold War history, US foreign policy, and diplomatic history, Del Pero will talk about the evolution, challenges, and contradictions of NATO and the Pan-European security structure since the end of the Cold War. After a response from Romero, the floor will be open to questions and comments in what we hope will be a most lively debate.
