In the framework of the EUI Political Behaviour Colloquium, this seminar features a paper presentation by Researcher in the Department of Political and Social Sciences, Nerea Gándara Guerra.

Following recent evidence on the positive relationship between women's movements and female empowerment, this paper sheds light on the effects of feminist protests on gender-based violence by delving into the Spanish feminist movement. The 8th of March 2018 - commonly known as 8M- constituted a tipping point for the Spanish feminist movement after achieving to gather 5 million people to protest all over Spain. Relying on individual and administrative data at the quasi-municipal level, I use a difference-in-difference design to assess the behavioural effects of the 2018 Women's day protests on reported intimate partner violence. Results show that feminist mobilizations increase the reporting of violence against women. Evidence suggests that this increase comes from a change in attitudes, namely the rise of feminist identification among women, and the popularity of feminist cues for society. This is reflected by an increase in reporting violence to the authorities not only by the victims themselves but also by third parties. This study contributes to the literature on grassroots mobilizations, specifically feminist protests, and on positive change in gender-related attitudes and behaviours.

The speaker will be presenting in person. Participants can follow the talk from Seminar room 2, although space is restricted on a first-come, first-served basis to a maximum of 28 people. The talk will also be live-streamed and participants will receive the zoom link once registered.
