The Summer Academy will provide a fresh perspective on the major challenges faced by contemporary European societies. In what shape is Europe’s democracy? Does it face a crisis? And what can be done to level inequalities and meet Europeans’ aspirations for a fairer, environmentally sustainable, and inclusive society? These and other related topics will be systematically analysed and discussed by the SPS Summer Academy participants.
The Academy is a chance for participants to have a full-immersion experience in the academic and social life of the EUI. Participants will attend a mix of lectures and workshops, and have the opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from both peers and faculty. A tour of the city and other social activities are also planned.
During the course, participants will inter alia examine the questions of European integration, current trends in citizen political participation, transnational solidarity in Europe, and under what institutional conditions populations exhibit "wisdom of the crowd".
Finally, Professor Hanspeter Kriesi will deliver a keynote lecture asking if there is a crisis of democracy in Europe and reflecting on the conditions for democracies to survive.
