One role of the EU was always also to create a common language, both metaphorically and literally, for legal research in and about Europe. Automated translation is also one of the success stories of LLMs and generative AI, currently translation tools vastly outperforming the rule based, symbolic approach of old. For law and the administration of justice, this success poses opportunities and challenges, which are not always reflected in the public or regulatory discussion on legal AI. Since the onset of modernity, the rise of the nation state intimately linked the concept of law to that of a national language, a connection reflected in multiple procedural rules and provisions that require litigants to use officially prescribed languages only. The masterclass draws on research by AI4People on the ethics of legal technology, and the EU cost action project LITHME, to explore the disruptive potential of machine translation as new 'linguistica universalis', a shared linguistic space for the law, and the legal and ethical constraints that instruments such as the EU AI Act impose on its development and deployment.
