In his book, Professor Specter critically reassesses the intellectual origins of political realism – and argues that realism emerged in Germany and the United States as an ideological justification for Empire. The argument about the link between realism and Empire entails significant consequences for academic disciplines as diverse as intellectual history, IR theory, history of international relations, and postcolonial studies. In this panel, we will reflect on the legacy of political realism and assess its consequences for international affairs and academic pursuits today. The event will be also live-streamed on zoom.
