Each year, the ACO organises a career conference to enhance the future career possibilities of early career academics. This year’s conference focuses on the application for ERC starter grants and Marie Curie fellowships, two very prestigious funding opportunities in the European Research Area.

The Academic Careers Observatory (ACO), an initiative of the Max Weber Programme, facilitates the diffusion of knowledge among young researchers about national academic careers and research opportunities in the social sciences and humanities, throughout Europe and beyond. Career planning for PhD candidates and post-doc fellows can be easy in one's own country of reference, but often proves complicated when pursuing an international profile.

ACO plays an important role towards the realisation of the European Research Area (ERA). The ERA was established in 2000 to increase the mobility of, and networking between, researchers, the sharing of knowledge, and the openness and coordination between European, state and regional research programmes.
